Dr. Larry Kosten
Dr. Larry Dean Kosten, 71, of Fairview Heights, IL, passed away on June 10, 2017 surrounded by his daughters and wife.
Larry was born on September 6, 1945 in East St. Louis, IL to Clarence and Melverne (nee Meier) Kosten. He attended Holy Cross Lutheran Grade School and Collinsville Township High School. His senior year he was awarded the S.A.R. Good Citizenship Award, Chairman of the Odd Fellows UN Pilgrimage to NY, and was salutatorian of his 1963 graduating class. He then attended Washington University for two years and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He attended University of Illinois Dental School in Chicago and was elected into the Honorary Dental Fraternity. Upon graduation, he entered specialty training in orthodontia.
Larry married Martha Kosten, nee Eaton, on June 17, 1967, whom he affectionately referred to as "Dolly." They had two daughters, Deanne (Matt) Foster and Kara (Marty) Hunsucker, both of Columbia, IL. He felt blessed to be Grandpa and Pa-Pa to Ryan and Abby Foster and Grace and Jack Hunsucker. To them, he was the best!
Larry opened his orthodontic practice in Collinsville, IL in April, 1971 and later opened a satellite office in O'Fallon, IL in the Spring Valley Dental Building. What he loved most was creating beautiful smiles on the faces of his patients.
First and foremost in Larry's life was his devout faith in God and love of his family. Larry was a lifelong learner, true gentleman, and always willing to help others. He had his private pilot's license, was an avid bridge player, enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren, loved playing golf and was a "Hole in One" member. He had served on the Board of Directors of Metro-East Lutheran High School and was later president for several years. He was on the Stonewolf Community Board of Trustees. He also served his country in the Army Reserve Dental Corp.
Larry is survived by his wife of 50 years, daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren. He has two brothers, Robert (Joy) of Florida and Dr. Kenneth (Jean) Kosten of Edwardsville, IL, five nephews and their families, aunt, cousins, and numerous friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Melverne (nee Meier) Kosten and his most loved in-laws, Otis and Pearl Eaton.
His family would like to thank Mary Hanvey and the staff in the Memorial east ER for the excellent and compassionate care given to Larry and family. Thank you also for the support and love given to us by our family and friends.
In lieu of flowers and Larry's love of children, memorials are requested to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
