Velda Loretta Armes
Velda Loretta Armes, age 80 of Troy, IL born August 29, 1937 in Corning, AR passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Liberty Village Care Center in Maryville, IL.
Velda retired after 21 years of service as a physical education teacher for the Triad School District, and served two terms as the President of the Triad Teacher’s Union. She was an alderwoman for eight years, and was the first woman mayor of Troy serving for eight years from 1989 – 1997. She was a member of Collinsville Church of Christ and was involved with various activities at church. While she was a teacher she coached softball, volleyball and basketball. And at one time was a member of the Troy Women’s Club. She enjoyed bowling and boating.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elvin Doy Jackson and Bertha nee Clark Jackson; and a sister.
She is survived by her husband, Connie Armes, whom she married May 19, 1957; a daughter, Karen (Dale) Mollet of Troy, IL; a son, Kevin (Diana) Armes of Austin, TX; four grandchildren: Adam (Megan) Mollet, Sara (Tim) Duncan, Nathan (Kaysie) Armes, and Bradan Armes; five great grandchildren: Logan, Briley, Addelynn, Grayson, and Aiden; and a brother, Melvin Jackson of Paragould, AR.
Visitation will be from 4pm to 8pm on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10am on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Collinsville Church of Christ, 1400 Troy Road, Collinsville, IL with Rev. Terry Mabery and Rev. Kelvin Pugh officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Shults Lewis Child & Family Service and will be received at the funeral home.
