Dr. Bertram Kulasekara, 85, of Edwardsville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at Willowcreek Rehab & Nursing in Belleville, Illinois.
Dr. Kulasekara was born on October 24, 1933, in Sri Lanka, the son of the late Charles and Lilly Kulasekara. He was an accomplished dental surgeon and periodontist and was on faculty in several dental schools. His career included improving the dental health of populations covering multiple countries in four continents. He graduated with his Doctor of Dentistry degree from Kandy, Sri Lanka and his Post-Graduate Specialty in Periodontology from Oslo, Norway. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved having his entire family gather around him and enjoyed being with his grandchildren. He also loved cars, gardening, building, international travel and tasting great food.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Kulasekara was preceded in death by one sister, Mallika Kulasekara.
He is survived by his wife, the former Chandra Kodituwakku, whom he married on November 13, 1961. Also surviving are four children: Andrew Kulasekara of Beverley, England; Shane (Leilani) Devoy of Barrow-Upon-Humber, England; Nalin (Susan) Kulasekara of Edwardsville; and Dilani (Steve) Gamble of Beverley, England; four sisters: Prema, Pearl, Beatrice and Piyawathi; and nine grandchildren: Michaela Kulasekara, Ryan Kulasekara, Kamen Devoy, Jasmine Devoy, Kelsey Devoy, Ethan Gamble, Calista Gamble, Anca Sfarghiu, and Patrick Sfarghiu.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at 10:30 a.m., with blessings and remembrances at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, Illinois. In accordance with Dr. Kulasekara's wishes, his body will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Glen Ed Food Pantry, 125 5th Ave, Edwardsville, IL 62025 .
