Obituary

Betty Mae Schaulat (nee Poneleit) , age 88 of Collinsville, IL, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Betty was born on April 27, 1935 to William and Alice (nee Gunther) Poneleit of Collinsville, IL.  As a native of Collinsville, Betty attended Holy Cross Lutheran School and graduated from Collinsville High School.  She worked at a local soda fountain when she met and married another Collinsville native, Norman Schaulat on March 27, 1954.  The two were married over 50 years.

Betty was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married.  She sang in the choir and supported various groups there throughout her lifelong membership.  Christian life and service was an important aspect of Betty's life, which she embraced to the fullest.

After a brief military life with her husband in Ohio, Betty returned to civilian life in Collinsville with Norman, and their new son, Michael. A second son, Ronald, added to her joy as a housewife.  Mr. and Mrs. Schaulat worked together at the family business, Schaulat Plumbing Supply, where the two worked together until retirement.  Here Betty could always be counted on for a smile and a kind word to customers.  Upon retirement, Betty returned to aiding the Holy Cross Church with weddings, funerals and other special events.  Family and faith were most important to Betty.  Service was always in her character whether to husband, children, grandchildren or church family.  Betty attended worship services regularly until unable to do so any longer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Norman; sister, Joyce Phillips; and in-laws, Arthur and Mary Adele Schaulat.

She is survived by her sons, Dr. Michael and Dr. Ronald Schaulat; daughter-in-law, Laura Schaulat; grandchildren, Audrey Lewis and Elizabeth Crouch; brother, William Poneleit; sister, Norma Hubert; nieces and nephews.
