Obituary

Connie Elanor Phelps, age 82 of Caseyville, IL, peacefully passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Connie was born on January 4, 1940 in East St. Louis, IL to the late Forest and Virginia (nee Davis) Hurst.  She married the love of her life, Gerald "Jerry" R. Phelps on January 17, 1959, and they had four children, Kathy, Terry, Tammy and Karen.

As a teenager, Connie worked at Jimmy's Malt Shop in East St. Louis, IL.  At one time she was a secretary for Kreitner Elementary School in Collinsville.  She started her career at the Caseyville Post Office, transferred to the Collinsville Post Office, and retired on September 30, 2011 after 36 years of service.  She enjoyed spending time with family and going to the casinos.  She was lovingly known as "Ma Connie" to her grandchildren and "GG" to her great-grandchildren.  She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Phelps; parents, Forest and Virginia Hurst; brother, Richard Hurst; granddaughter, Chapin Gross; three sisters-in-law:  Marie Hurst, Carroll Hooks Phelps and Beverly Phelps; brother-in-law, Robert Phelps; and mother and father-in-law, Carl and Robertine Phelps.

She is survived by her children:  Kathryn (David) Benson, Terrance (Brenda Dill) Phelps, Tammy Phelps and Karen (Dwayne) Gross; six grandchildren:  David Benson, Donnie (Cassandra) Benson, and Michael (Cassie Cole) Benson, Maxwell and Samuel Phelps, and Larah Gross; seven great-grandchildren:  Blake, Carson, Parker, Olivia, Alexandra and Kynslee Benson, Addie Stone; three brothers:  Robert Hurst, Durwood (Carolyn) Hurst and Lew (Betty) Hurst; sister-in-law, Rita Hurst; numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, Maryville, IL.

Funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Forest Hurst officiating.  Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be received at the visitation or can be mailed to the funeral home at 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
