Obituary

David Lee Durham, age 90 of Collinsville, IL, born June 30, 1933, in West Frankfort, IL, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024, at Brightly Senior Living in Glen Carbon, IL.

He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. He then went on to work at Cerro Copper and Brass until he retired in 2001 after 46 years. David was a member of the VFW and Elks Lodge, both of Ironton, MO. He was also a member of the Collinsville Bass Club and enjoyed bass tournaments.  David was a chairman of Cerro Copper Credit Union, and loved football and basketball. David and his wife, Bettye, often visited their cabin in Ironton, MO, where he was known to the locals as "The Mayor". David dearly enjoyed life and did so by socializing, going to casinos, listening to George Jones, and having a cold "friendly".

David was preceded by his parents: Elbert and Wanda (nee Fife) Durham; a brother-in-law, John Roberts; three nieces: Teresa A. (Ray) Bohnenstiehl, Bonnie J. Spengler, and Jody L. Spengler; and a nephew: David W. Ross.

He is survived by his wife, Bettye (nee Ross) Durham, whom he married March 7, 1965; sister, Carolyn Roberts of Collinsville, IL; ten nieces and nephews: James O. (Kathy) Ross, Linda F. (Jay) Luna Smith, Brenda S. (Rich) Roustio, Jane A. (Jeff) Farrar, Scott (Rita) Gallimore, Steve Gallimore, Natalie (Taylor) Manette, Steve Spengler, John David Roberts, and Tracey (John) Velde; 11 great-nieces and nephews; 25 great-great-nieces and nephews; and four great-great-great-nieces and nephews – whom he was very close to and was a wonderful uncle to them.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024, from 2pm to 5pm at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, IL.

Service will follow at 5pm with Pastor Robert Scott Gallimore officiating.

Burial will be on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 10 am at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association and may be received at the visitation or mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 North Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
