David Nelson Wentzel, 65, of Maryville, IL, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Stillwater Senior Living in Edwardsville.
He was born on October 23, 1960, in St. Louis, MO, to Harlan and Irene (née Wolf) Wentzel.
David was a 1978 graduate of Collinsville High School. He later earned a vocational degree and worked as a draftsman in the manufacturing industry. A talented craftsman, David built several homes throughout his life, including the home he raised his family in. He took great pride in his work. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed camping, traveling, and watching the Game Show Network, especially Deal or No Deal. Music was another of his passions.
Above all, David treasured the time he spent with his family. His greatest joy came from being with his wife, children, and grandchildren, creating lasting memories that will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harlan Wentzel; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Maxine Stephens.
He is survived by his mother, Irene Wentzel of Collinsville, his beloved wife, Lisa (née Stephens) Wentzel of Maryville, IL, whom he married on September 7, 1985; two sons, Andrew Wentzel of Maryville, IL, and Matthew (Mia) Wentzel of St. Louis, MO; two grandsons, Harrison and Colton; one brother, Loren (Debbie) Wentzel of Troy, IL; two sisters, Carol (Brian) Hart of Collinsville, IL, and Ellen (Mike) Milkovich of Collinsville, IL; two brothers-in-law, Michael (Lisa) Stephens of Glen Carbon, IL, and Mark (Katherine) Stephens of Maryville, IL; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Memorial visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Collinsville. In David’s memory please wear Cardinal attire.
A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church, with Rev. Dale Skeesick officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the Holy Cross (Comfort Dog Ministry) or Holy Cross Lutheran School. Donations will be received at the visitations or may be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
