Obituary

Doug Smith, age 75 of New Douglas, IL, born October 23, 1948, in Vandalia, IL, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2024, at Mercy South Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

Doug was a Collinsville High School graduate, Class of 1967. He was the owner and operator of a scrap metal and flooring business. He was a great man of God and a lifetime member of Lifeline Fellowship in Sorento, IL. Doug was a very generous man with a heart of gold. He had a passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Helen (nee Miller) Warren; his biological mother, June (nee Miller) Smith; his first wife of 45 years, Lillian (nee Hubbard) Smith; and a son, William Robert "B-Bop" Canaday; biological brother and sister, Charles Hershberger and Alice Schulte; a sister, Martha Miller; and three brothers: Charles Warren, Kenny Warren, and Gene Warren.

Surviving are his spouse, Gail (nee Denny) Smith, whom he married May 27, 2016; six children: Michael (Debbie Mason) Canaday of Collinsville, IL, Debbie Morein of Belleville, IL, Mindy (Dan) Long of New Douglas, IL, Sheila (Chuck) Jerls of Waterloo, IL, Michael (Becky) Long of Pierron, IL, and Christy Hunter of Glen Carbon, IL; 18 grandchildren: Justin Buzick, Hope Morein, Doug (Josie) Mims, Jake (Haley) Mims, Austin Canaday, Kayla (Justin) Schulte, Chance Denbow, Danielle (Leonard) Robles, Mary Kate Long, Quentin Black, Jayden Long, Jayce Long, Malachi Long, Lizzy Long, and Mackenzie Jerls; 5 great-grandchildren: Douglas Mims, Tyson Mims, Kaiden Allguire, Alayna Canaday, Elliott Schulte, and another on the way; a sister, Mary Prange; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on September 8, 2024, at Lifeline Fellowship, 702 N. Main St, Sorento, IL 62086.

Memorials may be made in Doug's honor to the Sesser-Valier High School Outdoorsmen Club where he enjoyed and appreciated the generosity of the kids who helped him hunt during the hunting season.  All donations will be received at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
