Gary Scott Sawyer, 76, of Staunton, IL, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra, IL.
He was born September 20, 1950, in Monticello, IL, to the late Theodore and Hazel (nee Fisher) Sawyer. Gary earned his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and made his career in the accounting industry. He honorably served in the United States Army.
Gary enjoyed reading, watching the St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Blues, fishing, cycling, and collecting John Deere memorabilia, among many other interests. Most of all, he loved watching and supporting his children and grandchildren at their games and sporting events.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy (nee Stephenson) Sawyer, whom he married on June 20, 1987. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Russell, Al (Dean), and Eddie Sawyer.
He is survived by his two children, Christopher (Jaime) Sawyer of Marine, IL, and Bridgette (Kevin) Ebersoldt of Grafton, IL; five grandchildren, Mackenzie (Logan), Alexander, Cole, Brock, and Karys; two great-grandchildren, Lily Ebersoldt and one on the way; two brothers, Kenny (Jan) Sawyer of Hammond, IL, and Larry (Faye) Sawyer of Arthur, IL; a sister, Wanda Williams of Yorkville, IL; a sister-in-law, Ann Sawyer of Hammond, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, IL. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m.
Burial with military honors will take place at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and will be received at the visitation or may be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
