On Saturday, February 6, 2021, God called George "Rocky" Lane, age 81, to enjoy his heavenly life.
Born on June 25, 1939 in Oak Park, IL, and raised in Hinsdale, IL, Rocky became a member of the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on August 27, 1939 at Redeemer Lutheran Church. He graduated from Hinsdale Township High School, and after graduation enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served as an Air Policeman in the 815 th Air Police Squadron Strategic Air Command. After serving four years, he enrolled at Culver-Stockton College and graduated with a degree in Business Administration and Economics. He was a member of Tau Epsilon Fraternity.
His business career started with Uarco Business Forms. He later joined Shell Oil Company in marketing. Through company transfers, he was assigned to the St. Louis area. In 1979 Rocky founded Creative Business Forms & Supplies, Inc. A few years later, he opened Office Plus in Collinsville, IL and in Litchfield, IL. While managing his companies, he joined the Board of Directors of Standard Federal Bank, Chicago, IL, and Standard Financial, a holding company. With the inception of Standard Financial Mortgage Company, he was one of two directors selected to serve on that start-up company board. He also served on the board of Capital Equities Corporation. In 2009, he sold his companies and retired.
Serving his church and community was important to him. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Collinsville for 23 years. He served as a Deacon and on the Stewardship Board. He coached basketball for nine years and led the 1982 Holy Cross High School team to win the state and national titles. Since 1995 he was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Dorsey, IL, where he served nine years on the Stewardship Board and six years as an Elder.
In Collinsville he was a charter member of the Downtown Development Commission and served for 20 years on the board of the Collinsville Main Street Program. These programs were instrumental in Phases One and Two of the downtown redevelopment. He was also an officer and coach for the Collinsville Soccer Association.
Rocky was a charter member of the Collinsville Sunrise Kiwanis Club. He served two terms as President and as Division Lieutenant Governor. He was awarded into the George F. Hixon Fellowship and is a Diamond One member. He was also awarded the Luis V. Amador award for community service and is a member of the Heritage Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George C. and Ruth C. (nee Glinke) Lane; wife, Jane J. (nee Hemminghaus) Lane; and infant grandson, Evan Phelps.
He is survived by five children: William "Bill" (Julie) Lane of Collinsville; Robert "Bob" (Nicole) Lane of Collinsville; Bradley "B.J." Lane of Collinsville, Brett (Jamie) Lane of Troy, and Rebecca "Becky" (Clint) Phelps of Troy; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Dorothy Kennedy of Collinsville.
Visitation will be 3 – 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, Maryville, IL. Due to the current COVID restrictions, social distancing guidelines will be observed and face masks are required.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 7183 Renken Road, Dorsey, IL 62021 with Rev. Brandon Larson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church Lane Family Scholarship Fund and will be received at the funeral home.
