Grace S. Gergely-Townzen, age 88 of Collinsville, IL, born March 28, 1935 in Granite City, IL, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.
Grace worked as a candy striper in her younger years for St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Granite City, IL, now known as Gateway Regional Medical Center. She later was the caregiver to her first husband, Mike Gergely, until his passing. Grace enjoyed gardening and was very fond of roses, tulips, and daffodils.
She is survived by her husband, Chester Townzen, whom she married on June 14, 2000; a brother, George Stenitzer, Sr.; a sister, Barbara "Bobby" Maker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Anna, nee Gawronska , Stenitzer; a brother, Eddie Stenitzer; and a sister Charlotte Tucker.
Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at 11:30 a.m., at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Glen Carbon, IL.
A celebration of life will follow at the VFW Post 5691 in Collinsville from 1-4 p.m.
