John Michael Stephens, 71, of Collinsville, IL, passed away at his residence on Thursday, June 12, 2025. Born April 13, 1954, in East St. Louis, IL, John was a lifelong resident of the Metro East area and a proud public servant.
John dedicated 29 years of his life to serving the community as a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Collinsville, retiring with honor and gratitude from a career he loved. Before joining the fire service, he worked in construction and was known as a jack of all trades. There wasn't much John couldn't fix or build.
Outside of his professional life, John was a man of many passions. He found joy in the game of golf, crafting his own whiskey, and creating beautiful stained-glass artwork. He was known for his sense of humor, his generous spirit, and his unwavering love for his family.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elizabeth "Betty" (nee Holshouser) Stephens; two brothers, Mark and Chuck Stephens; and his sister, Susan DuVall.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen (née Condellone) Stephens, whom he married on May 18, 1974; his daughter, McKenzie (Mike) Stephens of Albuquerque, NM; his son, Simon (Megan) Stephens of St. Louis, MO; and his cherished grandchildren, Shaw, Gwenevere, and Daphne. He also leaves behind his brother, Stephen Stephens of Collinsville, IL; a sister, Mary (Terry) Wilson of Collinsville, IL; and many friends and former colleagues who will miss him deeply.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville.
A funeral Mass will follow at 1:00 p.m., with Father Michael Haag officiating. Burial will take place at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery.
