Joyce J.
Skelton
Oct 28, 1930 — Oct 26, 2023
Collinsville
Joyce J. Skelton, age 92 of Collinsville, IL, born October 28, 1930 in Collinsville, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, MO with her family by her side.
Joyce was a Collinsville High School graduate, Class of 1948. She married the love of her life, Richard J. Skelton, on April 30, 1949 and they shared 73 years together until his passing in December of 2022.
She started working as a secretary at Gauen Lumber Company in Collinsville, then went on to work at St. John United Church of Christ as a secretary from 1964 until retiring in 1990. She and her late husband, Rich, were very involved in the church, where if you saw one of them at a church event, the other was usually not far behind. Joyce was also a huge St. Louis Cardinal fan and loved to attend the St. Louis Muny Opera. She and Rich were both fans of the Edwardsville Lady Tiger basketball and softball teams. To sum it up, Joyce was the type of person who never met a stranger. She tried to never say a bad thing about another person, always looking for the good in others. She truly missed her church family during her 18-month illness.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Etta (nee Wild) Fischer; and two brothers and their spouses: Milan (Annie) Fischer and Paul (Helen) Fischer.
Surviving are her two children: Sherry Skelton of Glen Carbon, IL and Richard (Janet) Skelton of Collinsville, IL; four godchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2023 at St. John United Church of Christ in Collinsville.
Funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Katie Jo Bielke officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Collinsville.
Memorials are suggested to St. John UCC or St. Luke's Hospital Center for Cancer Care and will be received at the visitation or may be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
