Obituary

Rev. Dr. Lloyd E. Shaw, age 93 of Collinsville, IL passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon, IL.

He was born March 20, 1930, in a farmhouse near Clintonville, PA.  Lloyd was the son of Frank and Esther (nee Gibson) Shaw.  Lloyd graduated from Clintonville High School in 1948.  Then he was called by God to the gospel ministry, so he prepared himself by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Grove City College in 1952 and a Master of Theology Degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1955.  In 1970 he was awarded a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Sterling College in Kansas.  Additional education included psychological counseling training at Menninger Foundation in Topeka, KS 1963 – 1964 and summer school at Oxford University, England in 1965.  In the summer of 1970, he attended the first Catholic-Protestant Conference called by Pope John XXIII in Rome.

In June of 1955 he began his first pastorate in Mount Ayr, IA.  While serving in the pastorate, he served as Stated Clerk of College Springs Presbytery.  In 1958 he accepted a call to be the Associate Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Clay Center, KS.  His work involved directing the Christian Education Program of that large church plus preaching on Sunday at a small rural church named Four Mile.  His innovative design for teacher's training was highlighted in the Moody Monthly Magazine in 1960.

In 1962 Lloyd accepted a call to be Senior Pastor of Central Presbyterian Church in Topeka, KS.  While there, he received counseling training at Menninger Foundation.  With this training, he began a part-time counseling ministry together with his ministry.  During his last year in Topeka, he was elected Moderator of Topeka-Highland Presbytery.

In 1970 Lloyd was called to be Head of Staff of Roseland Presbyterian Church in Chicago.  He directed that church through a racial transformation of the Roseland community.  Once that was accomplished, he accepted a call to the Presbyterian Church in Collinsville, IL.  He served the Collinsville church for 18 years, retiring in 1992.  After retirement, he continued to be active in supply preaching, counseling, writing and ministerial duties.

Lloyd's hobbies in retirement were writing and traveling.  He wrote eight books, three of which were used as Christian textbooks in small groups and Sunday School classes.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Esther Shaw; his first wife, Joan (nee Fay) Shaw; three brothers:  Bill, Dale and Alton Shaw.

Surviving are his wife, Mary M. Renfro; two daughters: Gail Shaw of Collinsville, IL and Michelle (Cody) Ownbey of Springfield, IL; a son, Mark Shaw of Irvine, CA; grandson, Dayne Ownbey of Springfield, IL; four step-children:  John (Robin) Renfro of Los Angeles, CA, Karen (John) Cushing of Glen Carbon, IL, Bruce (Julie) Renfro of Cincinnati, OH and Jean (Craig) McCammon of Chesterfield, MO; nine step-grandchildren:  Justin (Julia), Joshua and Christian Renfro, Michael (Kirsi) and Kevin Cushing, Jenna and Sarah Renfro, Colin and Katherine McCammon; a second wife, Cindy Shaw; three sisters: Dorothy Heckathorn of Meadville, PA, Erla (Charles) McDermott of Southington, OH, and Rhonda (Arthur) Cubbon of Oil City, PA; a sister-in-law, Pam Shaw of Kennerdell, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
