Obituary

Martha Lieda Ripple, age 83 of Maryville, IL passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville surrounded by family.

She was born on January 21, 1939, in Lithuania to the late Albert and Ida (nee Zalyn) Wanagat.  She came to the United States in 1951.  Martha met her loving husband, Bernard "Bernie" Ripple in July 1963 at a picnic for military personnel at a park; they were engaged on May 10, 1964, and exchanged wedding vows on June 19, 1965, at St. John UCC in Collinsville, IL.

Martha was a graduate of Collinsville High School where she graduated a year early.  In addition, she graduated from St. Louis University and SIU-Edwardsville where she received her Masters degree-plus.  She was a retired teacher after 33 years from Collinsville Unit 10 School District.  She was a past CHS Band Parent/President, youth group advisor, a Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout cookie leader, Secretary and Treasurer for the Collinsville Education Association, Treasurer for Region 45 Education Association, Building Representative, a ballet mom, and a member of St. John UCC.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Jared Ryan Ripple Shadwick.

Martha adored her family.  In addition to her loving husband of 56 years, she is survived by her two daughters, Lieda (David) Shadwick of Collinsville and Tricia (Jeff) Rasch of Maryville; three grandchildren, Victoria (Micah) Lauth, Brendan and Tyler Rasch; one great-grandchild on the way; sister, Ann Musso of Collinsville; brother, Adolf (Heather) Wanagat of Maryville; an aunt in Germany; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, Maryville, IL and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2022 at St. John United Church of Christ, 307 West Clay, Collinsville, IL.

Funeral service will follow the visitation at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Jenn Glover officiating.  Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.

Memorials may be made to the Red Cross to support the refugees from Ukraine, American Legion Post #365, SIUE Ice Hockey Club or the Maryville Christian School Athletic Department and will be received at the visitation or can be mailed to the funeral home at 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
