Matthew Bartley Butler, age 50, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at St. Louis University Hospital.

He was born February 3, 1973, in Centreville, IL to the late Nanci C. Butler.  Matthew attained his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of San Diego School of Law. He was admitted to practice in California, the United States District Courts for Southern and Central California, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Matthew was elected by the California Young Lawyers Association to the State Bar of California Board of Governors from 2006-2008.

Matthew was an avid baseball fan and card collector.  His two favorite teams were the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres.  He enjoyed going to spring training with his son, and playing video games.

His remaining years were spent in Edwardsville, IL. Matthew enjoyed visiting the shops and restaurants on Main Street, and talking with lawyers when they were on lunch from the courthouse. He met many wonderful people that his family would like to thank from the bottom of their hearts for all they have done for him.

Surviving are his two sons, Justin Butler and his mother, Alana Butler, and Maxwell Butler and his mother, Tia Stevens, all of San Diego, CA; a brother, Chuck (Shari) Youchoff of Glen Carbon, IL; three great aunts:  Hank (Jack) Botts of Columbia, MO, Lynda Pavia of Granite City, IL, and Jean Butler of Columbia, MO;  three first cousins:  John (DeNeil) Botts, Samuel (Shelley) Botts, and Missy Botts; many cousins, nieces and nephews, friends and acquaintances.

Visitation will be 5 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, IL.

Funeral service will follow at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Chuck Youchoff for Justin and Maxwell Butler's education fund and will be received at the visitation or can be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
