Michael T. LaZella, 79, of Collinsville, IL, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
He was born on February 27, 1947, in St. Louis, MO, and was lovingly raised by his foster parents, Sam and Julia Knebel of Pocahontas, IL. Michael was a 1966 graduate of Greenville High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1971.
Michael owned and operated his own janitorial company for many years. He was a dedicated member of the Collinsville Shriner's Club, serving as secretary for 13 years.
Michael was a talented artist and enjoyed camping, fishing, and all sports, whether he was playing them or cheering from his favorite chair at home. He was known for his competitive spirit and especially enjoyed beating his wife, Linda, at cards.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda (nee Sandretto) LaZella, whom he married on August 8, 1970; two children, Amanda (Brian) Dotzert of Marine, IL, and Alex (Rebecca) LaZella of Collinsville, IL; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Michael, Megan, Luke, Rhiannon, Wendy, Ezio, and JoAnna; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, IL.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 200 N. Lange, Maryville, IL 62062, with Father Rob Johnson celebrant. Burial will be in Robinson Cemetery, Pocahontas, IL.
Memorials may be made in the form of mass intentions at a Catholic Church of your choice. They will be received at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
