Richard Joe Smith, age 84, of Hillsboro, IL, born December 12, 1937 in West Frankfort, IL, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at Caseyville Nursing and Rehab Center in Caseyville, IL.

Richard worked at the Madison County Assessor's Office for many years until retiring.  He served in the National Guard Reserves and was an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Wave (nee Ehrhardt) Smith; his former wife, Janice Kay Smith; and his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary K. Ehrhardt.

Surviving is his brother, Charles (Donna) Smith of St. Peters, MO; numerous nieces and nephews; and his canine companion, Penny Boo.

Upon his request, Richard was cremated and no services will be held at this time.
