Richard J. Skelton, age 94 of Collinsville, IL, born May 23, 1928 in East St. Louis, IL, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, MO.
Rich was a graduate of the Collinsville Township High School Class of 1946, where he met Joyce when they were both members of the band. He was employed for 44 years as a brakeman/conductor for the former Pennsylvania Railroad. He was very active in the life of St. John United Church of Christ in Collinsville, having served on many boards and committees in addition to volunteering to help wherever he was needed over the years. He enjoyed playing golf, doing jigsaw puzzles, going to the Muny Opera, watching Cardinal baseball, and following the Edwardsville High School Lady Tiger basketball and softball teams. He also enjoyed traveling with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Naomi (Berg) Skelton, and two brothers, David & Charles Skelton.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Joyce (Fischer) Skelton, whom he married on April 30, 1949; a son, Richard (Janet) Skelton of Collinsville; a daughter, Sherry Skelton of Glen Carbon; four Godchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 12, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ in Collinsville. The family requests masks to be worn while in the church.
Funeral services will be held immediately following the visitation, beginning at 1 p.m., with Rev. Jennifer Sowell Glover and Rev. Katie Jo Bielke officiating. Burial will be at St John Cemetery in Collinsville.
Memorials may be made to St. John United Church of Christ and will be accepted at the visitation or may be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home (2800 N. Center Street, Maryville IL 62062)
