Obituary

Robert Jewell Wilson, 82, of Sugarloaf Key, FL, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025, at Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon, Illinois shortly after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Born on April 26, 1943, in San Luis Obispo, CA, Robert led a life of deep purpose, service, and dedication. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Jewell and Helen (née Symmons) Wilson, as well as his sisters, Barbara and Helen, and his brother, Wayne.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sharman (née Massena) Wilson, whom he married on November 13, 1971. He was a devoted father to two children, Dr. Robert (Dr. Jessica) Jewell Wilson II of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and Dr. Sharman (Dr. Andrew) Russell of Edwardsville, IL. He took great pride in his six grandchildren: Sarah, Emily, Joshua, Robert III, Jack, and George, each of whom brought immense joy.

A distinguished trial lawyer by profession, Robert also served with honor as an Assemblyman and State Senator for the State of California representing a district in San Diego County California. After serving in the legislature, he started a lobbying firm in Sacramento called The Wilson Group. His legal acumen and commitment to public service left a lasting legacy in the communities he served. Known for his sharp intellect, unwavering principles, and compassion for others, Robert earned the respect of colleagues, constituents, and clients alike.

In his free time, Robert and his wife, Sharman, were avid fly fisherman. Robert co-authored a book on fishing called "The West's Best Dry Flies." He was an accomplished landscape artist for over 30 years. In addition, Robert owned a basketball team in the CBA. As an avid golfer, Robert, built and ran a championship links style golf course in Idaho called The Links at Teton Peaks.

In retirement, Robert and Sharman made their home in Sugarloaf Key, where he enjoyed the beauty and serenity of the Florida Keys. Despite his many accomplishments, Robert was most proud of his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. His warmth, wisdom, and wit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

No public service will be held.

Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and will be received at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
