Ruth Ellen Mathias, age 93, of Highland, IL, peacefully passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Highland Healthcare.

Born on November 15, 1931, in Collinsville, IL, Ruth was the daughter of the late Philip and Oradell (nee Thurston) Kunkel. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill Mathias; her sister, Catherine Dortch; her brothers, Ervin Kunkel, Philip Kunkel, and Robert Kunkel; as well as six stepbrothers and stepsisters.

Ruth worked for many years as a grocery clerk at both the former Collinsville Piggly Wiggly and SuperValu. She was a longtime member of the Moose, Elks, and VFW organizations, where she found fellowship and friendship throughout the years. In her leisure time, she especially enjoyed fishing, a simple pleasure that brought her great joy.

She is survived by her two sons, James (Connie) Irvin of Collinsville, IL, and Gary (Cheryl) Irvin of Glen Carbon, IL; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly; and her long-time companion, Robert Hinkle who continues to reside in Florida.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 26, 2025 at Caseyville Cemetery in Caseyville, IL.
