Sarah Elizabeth
Goebl
Jan 3, 1940 — Nov 19, 2023
Collinsville
Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Goebl, née Abernathy, died at the age of 83 with family at her side. She is survived by her daughters Shelly Goebl-Parker and Julie Goebl; their partners Jon Parker and John Olivio; her loving grandchildren Isaac Parker, Clara Parker and Isabella Olivio; her sisters Grace McKee, Marjorie Przestzelski and Dorothy Bartlett; and brother, Raymond Abernathy.
She was preceded in death by her son Christopher Mark Goebl, her parents, five brothers and two sisters.
Betty inspired her children by completing her degree as a working mom at the University of Memphis, earning a bachelors in English.
Known for her meticulous nature in all her pursuits, Betty's care and attentive eye made her a treasure as a teacher's aide, school secretary, bookkeeper and library assistant. In her later years, she provided in-home care for her grandchildren and other beloved babies. Her approach kept children actively engaged and encouraged to follow their curiosity and imagination with stimulating games and trips to the library.
Betty was an avid reader and researcher of classic fiction as well as contemporary science. She was a film lover, and a knowledgeable, skillful gardener. Betty was a lifelong learner and a serious, competitive game player. She always enjoyed a great pun or corny joke and was quick to produce them herself. As an excellent cook, she loved to sift through her extensive collections of recipes and surprise loved ones with her endeavors, such as delicious spiced watermelon pickles or her legendary corn casserole.
A memorial service will be held for Betty at a later date.
