Shirley May
Grimm
May 22, 1930 — Jun 26, 2024
Collinsville
Shirley May Grimm, age 94 of Collinsville, IL, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
She was born May 22, 1930 in Collinsville to the late Howard Sr. and Elsa (nee Boesenberg) Hough, the only daughter of their three children. She married her high school sweetheart Don Grimm on September 8, 1951, and he preceded her in death on March 18, 1984.
Shirley was a Class of 1948 graduate from Collinsville High School, where she loved cheerleading for the Kahoks. She retired in 1998 from Collinsville Township after 27 years of service as the office manager, primarily overseeing the Township's care for senior citizens. She was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of Christ in Collinsville. Shirley was a Founding Member of the Anderson Hospital Board of Trustees, on which she served for 28 years. She was also a charter member of Anderson Hospital Auxiliary, serving as President for 2 years.
Shirley loved her extended family deeply and always wanted to care for them, especially with food and drink and activity. It gave Shirley great joy to host at her home, and family and friends frequently enjoyed Shirley's hospitality.
Music was never far away when Shirley was around. From a young age she played piano, and she joined her church choir at age 16, beginning a 78-year run of praise through song. She also sang with her beloved Collinsville Chorale and performed in all but four concerts in 29 years.
Shirley's enjoyment of life was always on display, and she rarely missed a social opportunity or travel itinerary. She was active until her final days.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Howard Jr. and Bob Hough.
Surviving are her four children: Steve (Pam) Grimm of St. Louis, MO, Michelle (Frank Scoggins) Grimm of St. Louis, MO, Debbie (Tony) Calza of Collinsville, IL, and Dan (Susan) Grimm of Wayne, NJ; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
