Obituary

Timothy Harold Buettner, 67, of Collinsville, IL, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at St. Louis University Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on May 29, 1959, in East St. Louis, IL, to Franklin and Ruth (Steffenhag) Buettner.

Tim graduated from Collinsville High School in 1977. He retired from Phillips Interior and Exterior in Freeburg, IL, after 45 years of dedicated service as a plasterer. More than a trade, plastering was Tim’s craft, and he was truly an artist in his work. He took great pride in his skill and attention to detail, earning the respect of those who worked alongside him and admired the quality of his hands. Throughout his career, he was blessed to work alongside his dad, uncle, brother, and nephew, carrying on a family connection through the trade he loved. He also enjoyed the camaraderie, stories, laughter, and friendships he shared with the guys he worked with over the years. He was a proud member of Plasters Local #90.

Tim found joy in life’s simple pleasures and in the people he shared them with. He loved fishing, especially the many trips to Reelfoot Lake. For decades, he also cherished time at the Lake of the Ozarks, where he was everyone’s trusted boat captain, creating countless memories on the water with family and friends. He was passionate about music, especially hard rock, and loved attending concerts with his wife.

Tim will be remembered as a quiet, steady, and dependable presence – a man whose strength was found not in being the loudest in the room, but in always being there for the people he loved. Above all, he treasured time with his family, and his greatest happiness came from being with his children and grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable pride and joy.

He was also a faithful member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Collinsville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Buettner; his brother and best friend, Mike Buettner; his father- and mother-in-law, Jim and Marilyn Muehlhauser; and his sister-in-law, Nan Muehlhauser.

Tim is survived by his loving wife, Candace "Candy" (Muehlhauser) Buettner, whom he married on February 2, 1985. Together they shared 41 wonderful years of marriage. He is also survived by his son, Matt (Lisa) Buettner of Collinsville, IL; his daughter, Sammi (Derek) Harmeier of Collinsville, IL; and his four beloved grandchildren, Marie, Simon, Masyn, and Lucas.

Also surviving is his beloved mother, Ruth Buettner of Collinsville, IL; two sisters-in-law, Tracie Buettner of Collinsville, IL and Kelly (Greg) Reed of New Paltz, NY; his brother-in-law, Scott Muehlhauser of O’Fallon, IL; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

Memorial visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Collinsville, IL.

A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Dr. Dale Meyer and Rev. Dale Skeesick. Private burial will be in Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery in Collinsville.
