Walter H. Unger, age 80 of Maryville, IL, born July 31, 1942 in East St. Louis, IL, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at Liberty Village Care Center in Maryville.

Walt retired after 45+ years of service from Boeing Corporation (previously McDonnell Douglas) as a software engineer/computer programmer.  He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He was a 50-year member of Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville. He was very active in a variety of church activities including RCIA, teaching high school PSR, eucharistic minister, and the choir. Walt was a 3 ^rd degree Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony "Tony" and Stella (nee Borkowski) Unger.

Surviving are his wife, Judy (nee Culpepper) Unger, whom he married July 4, 1964; three daughters: Connie (Angus) Crome of Maryville, IL, Janet (Bill) Sass of Africa, and Susie (Mike) Byer of Edwardsville, IL; six grandchildren: Kayla Crome, Kyle Crome, Jon (Allison) Sass, Matt Sass, Hannah Byer, and Andy Byer; a great-granddaughter, Madison Sass; and a brother, David (Carolyn Stilwell) Unger of Evansville, IN.

Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2023 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville.

Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Rob Johnson Celebrant.  Burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Edwardsville, IL.

Memorials are suggested in the form of masses at Mother of Perpetual Help or to the Alzheimer's Association and will be received at the visitation or can be mailed to Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
