William Mathew "Bill" Metzger, age 58, of Collinsville, IL., born March 17 th , 1964, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL, passed away on Thursday, June 9 th , 2022, in his home.
Bill Metzger was a lifelong Collinsville resident. Bill graduated from Collinsville High School in 1982 and from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in business and was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. While at Illinois Wesleyan, he was a four-year letterman of the track team where he ran the high hurdles as well as throwing the javelin. He was chosen and inducted into the Illinois Wesleyan Order of Titans, by the coaching and physical education staff based on athletic contributions, academic accomplishments, and general citizenship.
Following his graduation, he began working for the First National Bank of Collinsville. Bill furthered his education by attending banking school at the University of Wisconsin. At the time of his passing, he was a Senior Vice President for the First National Bank of Waterloo.
Bill's community service to Collinsville began soon after his college graduation. Following in his father's footsteps, he joined the Collinsville Rotary Club where he remained an active member for 36 years. He served as President in 1992 and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions and service. Selling oranges for Rotary was a part of every Christmas season.
Bill was a member of the Collinsville Education Scholarship Foundation since its inception in 2010 where he served on the board as Treasurer. In 2021, he spearheaded the transition to the Collinsville Area Community Foundation, which expanded the foundation's ability to benefit the Collinsville community.
He was a member of the Collinsville Maryville Troy YMCA Board and served as Treasurer for Family Hospice of Southern Illinois. He was a former member of the Collinsville Jaycees and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Collinsville.
When his children were growing up, he helped in many ways with their activities including coaching sports, attending Cub Scout meetings, traveling with volleyball and soccer teams, and fundraising.
He was always there to support his children and was proud of their accomplishments. He took pride in his yard and frequently conversed with his neighbors, often from his front porch. Throughout his life, Bill enjoyed many hobbies which included aviation, sprint car racing, and restoring older homes.
Bill was preceded in death by his father William James Metzger. He is survived by his children Brett William Metzger, Cole Mathew Metzger, and Darci Lynn Metzger all of Collinsville. He is also survived by this mother, Lois Welch Metzger of Collinsville, sisters Ellen Christine (Ben) Birch, of St. Louis, MO, and Susan Marie (Chris) Peters of Dove Canyon, CA. He is also survived by uncles Thomas (Cindy) Welch and Paul (Carolyn) Welch of Collinsville, IL and seven nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 3pm – 7pm Thursday, June 16 th , 2022 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, Maryville, Illinois, and from 9:30 -11am, Friday, June 17, 2022 at the SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 207 Vandalia, Collinsville, IL.
Funeral services will be at 11am, Friday, June 17, 2022, at the SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Rev. David Amsden officiating. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery in Collinsville, Illinois.
Memorials may be made to the Collinsville Area Community Foundation, the Collinsville Rotary Club, & Family Hospice of Southern Illinois – Belleville and will be received at the funeral home
