Obituary

William L. "Bill" Verbeck, age 89 of Maryville, IL, born July 31, 1929 in East St. Louis, IL, passed away on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL.

Mr. Verbeck was retired from the CSX (B&O) Railroad where he worked in the sales department for 38 years.  He began his career in St. Louis, which later took him to Kansas City, MO, Hamilton, OH, Toledo, OH and returned to the area working in the St. Louis office in 1973.  Mr. Verbeck was a 50-year member of the Collinsville Masonic Lodge 712 and Ainad Shrine Hospital Unit, where he gave tours for six years.  He was proud of the Shriner's Hospital and proud to be a Shriner.  He was a funnel cake maker for many years for the Collinsville Shrine Club, where he was a past president and secretary, and a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Collinsville.  Mr. Verbeck delivered for Meals on Wheels for over 10 years.  He enjoyed bass fishing with his brothers, bowling in the STL Traffic Club League, and watching his grandchildren's school sports.  He was a dedicated husband, father and grandpa.

Mr. Verbeck was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Eugene and Mary ( nee Foley) Verbeck; his first wife, Laverne ( nee Fisher) Verbeck; and two brothers, Gene and Jerry Verbeck.

He is survived by his second wife, Paulette ( nee Guion) Verbeck; a son, Steven (Marilyn) Verbeck of Fairfield, OH; a daughter, Susan (Tim) Evers of Collinsville, IL; grandchildren:  Justin (Jena) Verbeck, Kristin (Tommy) Portaleos, Erika (Alex) Felt; Paulette's children:  Meg (Owen) Moore of St. Louis, MO, Betsy Merkle of St. Louis, MO, Laura (Brian) Cawvey of Collinsville, IL, and Phillip (Susie) Watt of Collinsville, IL; Paulette's grandchildren:  Alex (Paula) Moore, Adam (Jenny) Moore, Andrew (Jessie) Cawvey, Craig and Scott Merkle; eight great grandchildren: Cooper, Grayson, Sophia, Grace, Beau, Khloe, Parker and Mack.  Also surviving are his brothers: Joe (Janet) Verbeck of Shiloh, IL and Charles Verbeck of Fairview Heights, IL; an uncle, Don (Roberta) Verbeck of Wildwood, MO; numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Memorial visitation will be 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, Maryville, IL.  Masonic services will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. following the visitation with Rev. Josh Wolford officiating.  Private burial will be held at a later date in Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL.

Memorials can be made to St. John United Church of Christ in Collinsville or Shriners Hospital for Children – St. Louis and will be received at the funeral home.
